How I work
I’m warm and collaborative in my work. In sessions with me, you can expect depth of experience, genuine care, and good questions. There’s room to name systemic oppression, and push back against ableism – and also for humour, creativity, and the process of building trust within a strong therapeutic relationship.
I offer skill-building to help develop the tools you need to meet life’s challenges. I can support you in creating new habits or daily practices that connect you with your intentions and goals. I’m also keen to offer relevant resources in the community and through books, podcasts, and other sources that can support our work together.
My experience in my own counselling and working alongside clients has taught me to trust this process. I know that change and growth happen when feelings and needs are prioritized, and time is taken to reflect, grieve, wonder, and explore.
I’m open to your questions, ideas, and feedback along the way. And I’ll check in to make sure that we’re focused on what’s most important to you. We may work together for a short time or a longer time and I strive to create space in each session for meaningful reflection and new possibilities.
Over the past 15 years, I’ve built counselling relationships with people with a wide range of backgrounds, in many different life stages. I’ve offered counselling services in community clinics and agencies, in a hospital, and in post-secondary institutions. I am committed to continuing education, and my own process of healing and knowing myself. I’ve worked in private practice since 2021, and I continue to be involved in mental health advocacy and volunteering in my local community.
Expressive Arts
Working creatively can be meaningful, effective, and powerful. I’ll offer ideas of things to try, and whether you’d like to use the arts in sessions is up to you. I also understand creativity as much wider than art or craft. I invite clients to consider how their unique ways of being creative can be a source of wellness and joy – including cooking, gardening, parenting, etc.
Somatics/Embodiment
Somatics includes a range of approaches to healing and transformation that engage the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. This process allows us to slow down and listen to the wisdom of your body. My work is rooted in the lineage of generative somatics (link), a politicized school of somatics. (What to expect. How to explain this…)
Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy acknowledges how social and cultural contexts influence our identities and experiences. In understanding how dominant narratives impact our lives, we can co-create new stories that are more meaningful and allow room for growth and positive change.
I also draw from mindfulness, DBT skills, parts work, nervous system science, and more.
